Just outside of Renwick, in Marlborough, the Forrest family has been crafting wines since the late 1980s. Returning to family roots and generations of farming in the Marlborough region seemed a natural progression for John and Brigid Forrest, after successful careers in scientific research and medicine.

Fast forward 30 years; many awards and accolades, various labels and vineyards across the country.

Pioneers in the Marlborough wine industry since 1988, John and Brigid Forrest– both doctors in their own right – kept asking ‘what’s next?’. Success came with the 2006 vintage Riesling, planting the seed for the innovative Sauvignon Blanc in 2009 and Rosé and Pinot Noir, a world first at 9.5% alcohol, in 2017. Their unique combination of scientific minds, creative souls and a desire to challenge the status quo has created wines for the modern world. “We are thinking about the future of wine drinking and we are also thinking about the next day. Our wines are for socialising and enjoying with friends, but still staying sharp.”

Cocooned by mountains on all sides, the Waitaki Valley wine-growing region lies 40km inland from the Pacific Ocean, stretching a mere 20km between Duntroon and Kurow on the southern flanks of the Waitaki River. Here, gentle north-facing slopes allow successful viticulture similar to Central Otago, with 1000 plus growing degree days. Unique to the region however, are the soils - free-draining river gravels, inter-layered with ancient limestone seabed. This combination of unique soil and climate gives Waitaki Valley wines their own distinctive personality; while still reflecting characteristics typical of Otago.

‘The land of the long white cloud’, Aotearoa, filled their dreams, a land of a new adventures, pastures new, a place to put down roots and immerse themselves in their new home, The Awatere Valley, Marlborough.

With a passion for horticulture, sustainability and guardianship of the land for future generations, the pair set out to grow a vineyard where their philosophy could flourish and express themselves in wine.

Bushmere Estate

Bushmere Estate is 100% family owned by the Egan family. They have been growing grapes for over 40 years. During this time there have been huge changes in the industry, from the growing of bulk grapes to the quality world class wines that are now attributed to the Gisborne area.

The vineyard is 17 hectares in the Central Valley Region of Gisborne District, growing mainly Chardonnay grapes, along with smaller plantings of Merlot, Malbec , Pinot Gris, Montepulciano and Sangiovese.

The name Bushmere Estate was chosen as the area was referred to as ‘Bushmere’ on old maps of the district. The Bushmere logo represents the three elements vital to the growing of grapes – earth, water and sun.

Gimblett Gravels

Unison is on the Gimblett Gravels, a former river bed with special soil that mirrors other premium wine regions across the world. The name Unison was inspired by the lessons of traditional wine making working in harmony with best of the new world techniques. Its ethos and plantings mirror European premium handcrafted regions where the vines are densely planted to produce low yields per vine and concentrated flavours.

Unison grows, makes & bottles all of the Red & Rosé wines onsite. The Whites are grown on cooler soils but made & bottled onsite.
